BIM provides digital fabrication of structural steel

BIM is very useful for the digital fabrication of structural steel. BIM can model entire steelwork structures in 3D along with last notch, plate and bolt to facilitate the fabricators in reviewing a 3D steel structural model right from the fabricated components. All detailed information as well as the drawings, material list and other data are automatically generated from the model. The various data can then be transmitted to production planning and automation systems. Such automated routine tasks permit the fabricator more time to focus on the principle precast design and detailing decisions.

A purpose-built building information model can nourish the manufacturing process as the design model contains all the geometry related with structural steel. The design informations are exported to a CIS/2 file (an industry standard data format for replacing steel information) to be used again in a steel detailing application.

Once the steel detailing is completed, the design team or contractor utilize the fabrication model for 4D modeling and clash detection with other building disciplines and models (MEP, architectural, etc.). The fabrication model contains more detail than the structural model, and consequently helpful for interference checking, particularly for building types or application where space is extremely tight.

Applying the design model directly for fabrication will produce a usual feedback loop among fabricators and designers. It will convey fabrication considerations forward into the building design procedure. Sharing the design model with fabricators for bidding will curtail the bid cycle and initiate more consistent bids based on reliable steel tonnages. And the coordination among the fabricated steel and the other building components will decrease the on-site issues and lower the increasing cost of steel erection.

An integrated BIM model empower fabricators to manage not only the fabrication phase of the project but also other verticals of the project as well as modeling, fabricated parts design and elaborating, contract management, financial evaluation, and supply chain management, along with keeping track of updated manufacturing data.

Trim down project cost by removing any inaccuracies in the design of fabrication components, minimizing wastage and ensuring timely delivery of project.

Benefits of BIM for steel fabrication :-

Aid in generating off-site fabrication models for real time viewing in order that throughout the actual process of implementation designers, fabricators and architects in a similar way do not face delays.

Allows clash-free design with consistent drawing sets

Accurate Visualization during fabrication and erection

Highly detailed models for making fabricated components

Allows reviewing of automated construction documents and material lists
High quality due to prefabrication of different components

Reduction in wastage and improvement in schedule and delivery

How Building Information Modeling helps fabricators

BIM is a solid modeling tool that can be utilized for clash detection and volumetric quantity-takeoff. BIM trims down conflicts and creates value in fabrication by making the building plan accurate. Besides the fabricators get the ability to have the section view being produced automatically with the help of BIM software.

Perfect fabrication of materials diminishes waste while the pre-assembly can save time.

BIM facilitates digital fabrication of building components and thus enables digital design-to-fabrication workflows for all the building disciplines.

Fabricators can create their own models from paper drawing and produce a bill order within a very short period of time.

BIM can automate design and detailing tasks for fabrication work to a higher degree and it’s models stays rational, semantically accurate even as they are manipulated.

BIM contains all the geometry related with structural steel and enhances the structural steel fabrication procedure. The design information for structural steel can be exported to a CIS/2 file and reprocessed in a steel detailing application. BIM models provide support for parametric objects at all levels for structural steel connections.

BIM also takes into consideration discarded steel and keep documentation of the same. At the time of requirement, this discarded steel can be easily located and reused eliminating the need to order new sections from the fabricator.

After the completion of steel details, the design team or the contractor can utilize the fabrication model for 4D modeling in addition to clash detection with other building disciplines and models.

With BIM the Fabricators can share the design models for bidding and it leads to cut down the bid cycle with more uniform bids based on consistent steel tonnages.

BIM keeps the coordination between the fabricated steel and the other building components which will decrease the on-site issues and bring down the cost getting higher for steel erection.
