Access BIM data in 2D or 3D directly within PlanGRid with PlanGrid BIM

PlanGrid, an Autodesk company and a leading solution provider in construction productivity software, just released PlanGrid BIM. Plangrid is now incorporated with Autodesk RevitⓇ to allow the users for accessing Building Information Modeling (BIM) data instantly in either 2D or 3D, directly inside PlanGrid on their mobile devices. Construction teams and facilities managers now will be able to preview rich BIM data in a user-friendly 2D interface or 3D environment to maintain superior precision in the job site as well as get rid of rework and take decisions quickly and with more confidence.

PlanGrid’s amalgamation with Revit facilitates the users to gain complete benefits of BIM beyond pre-construction with a great deal of data instantly at their fingertips. This amalgamation will form an integrated platform to consistently links the office, the trailer and the field.

PlanGrid BIM links rich BIM data from the design process to construction and operations.

Architects and engineers who apply BIM to design construction projects can generate a 3D models to function as a virtual illustration of how complicated work can be set up and building assets should interact. Models are implanted into rich property data like the height of a counter, material type of a wall or manufacturer details of a lighting fixture. But when these models are delivered to the field, they’re “flattened down” into PDFs, and the data is lost to the teams who perform the physical work of building or preserving facilities. This loss of data, in conjunction with a lack of 3D visualization in the field, can cause critical errors, lost time and rework.

PlanGrid BIM facilitates the construction and facilities teams to take informed decisions in real-time, with the most comprehensive data accessible and a consistent changeover among 2D and 3D.

With PlanGrid BIM, users can view BIM data properties inside recognizable 2D drawings or acess 3D to visualize assets in an efficient manner within the surrounding environment all from within PlanGrid’s software.

PlanGrid’s new BIM functionality comprises of the following :

• BIM-enabled Sheets: Users can tap objects to avail BIM data properties, like an object’s dimensions, material type or manufacturer details, all inside the recognizable 2D environment.

• 3D BIM Viewer: With a simple tap, users will be able to quickly transfer to a 3D view of a certain object while remaining offline. The viewer, presently in beta stage, contains features like zoom and snap tools for taking measurements among model objects.

• Revit Integration: Sheets are published directly from Revit into PlanGrid, ensuring precise BIM data, including sheet titles and numbers; drawings continue to contain PlanGrid features like automatic callout detection and hyperlinking.

Latest up-gradation to 3D Repo offers native Revit file support

3D Repo offers the cloud based digital platform for BIM data so that the users can availa the latest 3D models and produce real-time changes and informed decisions online. 3D Repo introduced the most updated version of its cloud-based digital construction platform with some exciting features like data validation with Smart Groups, native Revit file support, updates to SafetiBase (Health & Safety Issue Tracker), API key access, and supplementary rendering options.

With the inclusion of Smart Groups feature the users can get a simple way to authenticate the data and group model components. “Smart Groups democratizes the method of data validation, makes progress tracking simple and finally leads to more consistent data outputs for the client. Besides, it opens up the data validation method to all stakeholders despite of their knowledge of software or licensing constraints of other software.

3D Repo now contains native Revit support so that the users get the ability to upload Revit files directly to the 3D Repo platform where they will be easily controlled in an online database and applied in federations for design coordination.

It will save users significant hours of time while federating models with each design iteration. Earlier the users had to export to IFC file format prior to uploading, now it is possible to just upload files directly from Revit.

SafetiBase feature offers a collaborative way to allocate and utilize health and Safety information and project risk data within the model and it is also upgraded. Major updates comprise of a full audit trail of changes for each risk, supplementary post mitigation risk options, capacity to add and track residual risk and support for several markups.

SafetiBase adheres to the specification for ‘collaborative sharing and application of structured health and safety information with BIM’ (Publicly Available Specification PAS 1192-6).

TriBuild, Inc., a leading solution provider of software-as-a-service (SaaS) for the construction industry, just launched TriBuild Layout Design, a layout data preparation software for most recognized Autodesk tools, AutoCAD and Revit.

Contractors recognize major locations to set out on a jobsite with formation of points at these locations on the building design which are then uploaded to a field controller for doing layout.

This data preparation plays an important role for field layout and successful completion of the project. Common locations for layout range from hangers, sleeves, equipment, centerlines, footers and walls. With formation of points at these locations, field layout crews can obtain proper instruction concerning what work should be accomplished in the job site.

Some exciting features like automated point creation tools in TriBuild Layout Design and ability to generate points directly in Autodesk design application, facilitate the contractors to make their overall workflow better for generating data for layout.

The contractors get the ability to work directly in their design application and consequently they don’t have to worry about issues caused by the compatibility of file formats.

TriBuild Layout Design is accessible for the contractors who utilize AutoCAD or Revit (versions 2016-2019) and export data to all the leading instrument manufacturers including Trimble, Hilti, Leica, Topcon and Sokkia.

A 30-day free trial version is available to download from the TriBuild website.

How to manage projects with BIM efficiently

Building information modeling (BIM) process gains huge popularity among the architecture and construction industry. Since, BIM is extensively used by several architectural and engineering firms into their practice, it becomes difficult for the project managers to control the project teams employing BIM.

Given below, some vital tips to manage project with BIM in an efficient manner.

Recognize the method

BIM stands for a collaborative method of generating coordinated, internally logical and quantifiable information concerning a building with a central system of 3d models in spite of a separate set of 2d drawings. It is a new way of working that simplifies the workflow with an unified approach.

Know the competencies of the tool

A Revit model is much more than a 3d model, it contains a database of information which can be used for constructability analysis, quantity take-offs, performance analysis, facilities management and so on. Working in a model based framework makes sure greater precision; as components change in the plan, they proceed in elevations and sections. When the windows are provided in the exterior wall, window schedules are updated. Prompt 3d visualization facilitates taking decisions in advance. As a minimum, find out how to open, close and navigate through a model, cut sections and print drawings.

Follow the 60/40 rule
BIM workflow generally comprises of two steps: modeling and documentation. Accept about 60% of the time for modeling, rest for generating and annotating drawings. Set up design and documentation benchmarks and decide on the level of detailing for different elements before starting modeling. Should the model be applied for construction documentation or fabrication and assembly? Prior to add a wall, ascertain its width, make and fire rating. Fix the rules at the beginning.
Have a clash detection competition
A Revit model can easily determine the spatial clashes among different systems in the building, like ducts moving through beams or lights hitting sprinklers. It facilitates saving time and cost because of less errors all through the construction. While Revit facilitates fundamental diagnostics, software like Navisworks can recognize and document conflicts comprehensively. Arrange every other coordination meeting to be virtual, discuss with the model.
