How BIM was applied in the $1.85 billion new Royal Adelaide Hospital project

Royal Adelaide, a high-tech hospital in South Australia is the biggest building ever constructed in Australia. In this project near about 1,300 workers perform onsite to make plan and get the 10-level hospital ready to be introduced in 2016.

Some hi-tech methods were applied in the construction processes of the hospital through the Building Information Management system incorporated with myriad computer systems and numerous construction specifications.

Under this system the blueprint from paper has been shifted into a 3D computer system which enables contractors and staff to verify efficiently through tablets or smart phones. The 3D system helps in showcasing a wide array of building parts to be updated in real time as construction progresses. This consecutively enhanced the scopes for modules to be created off site involving supreme accurateness - then assembled on jobsite.

So, it can be said that the BIM system alias ‘virtual construction’ has has fundamentally transformed the construction industry.

Now the several users can sign up and avail the 3D images rather than searching for paper drawings, and all will be updated in real time.

The 3D approach will facilitate the prefabrication off-site, and save huge time and space at the construction site. Lots of incorporated models are transferred into the master 3D model that can decrease the possibility for inaccuracies compared to contractors working off paper plans.

The 3D designs necessitate each item to provide a code, and ensure that such items can be identified easily for future reference or preservation. A wide array of coded items varies from light fittings and furniture through to architectural fittings. It also integrates operating manuals for each item, ending the requirements to look for booklets.

Home Builders can produce a smarter estimate with BIM Pipeline

BIM Pipeline refers to a web supported, rules motivated material management and estimation system that applies BIM data to directly undertake comprehensive take-offs.

BIM Pipeline facilitates builders to control BIM data for producing complete master plan estimates through delta BOM reports for options, lot specific as built reports to directly cut purchase orders as well as confine changes focused on customer to track client customizations, all self-governing of the source of the BIM data. Builders can now find a way out to bridge the historical gap proficiently & perfectly amid design and estimation and minimize cycle times.

BIM Pipeline was specially designed for home builders to perform exact material takeoffs and rapidly understand their construction costs. The module based design facilitates builders to opt for the features for fulfilling their current goals.

BIM Pipeline uses and clarifies BIM data directly from numerous leading BIM applications like AutoCAD Architecture, Revit, Vertex BD, and VisionRez. Then it links design, sales, estimation, and purchasing by incorporating with back office system directly. It also outputs to Excel or homogeneous XML for incorporating with other back office systems.

BIM Pipeline comes up with three different modules as mentioned below:-

Builder module: It allows the users to handle all the consistent assets concerning a home builder and manage exactly what’s getting built.

Cloud estimating module: With Cloud Estimation the users will be able to get it all together by transmitting the BIM direct data to a full bill of materials.

Costing module: With the Costing Module you can prevent redundant tasks by using a complete BOM to align with various vendor's costs and establish a true cost to construct.

BIM Pipeline offers the following benefits to construction professionals:-

  • Connect design to estimating for precise automated takeoffs
  • Scale operations devoid of adding staff
  • Enhance net margins
  • Leverage the identified costs of a production builder, whereas facilitating customer specific changes to be happened and remain profitable.
  • Commanding rules based estimating

Knowing BIM

BIM or Building Information Management helps in keeping the workflow smooth between “the designed” and “the constructed” by managing information precisely. BIM is essential to coordinated and incorporate modifications, whenever & wherever required, between the conceptualized model of the building and the end result. It aids in enhancing the accuracy of the data the subsequent costing incurred.

We usually find a vast difference between what was conceived and the final result as in the entire construction process the design information is often replaced by alterations as per the requirement of the client, engineer and others. The raw data of the differences between the design and the construction create BIM diary that includes photographs and scanned copy of all the data, information of the design before anything is hidden concealed, or buried. These photographs support to detect alteration later when the construction is concealed by walls, floors, ceilings etc. The BIM diary also helps to check the activities on site and detect the conditions before, during, and after activities. This also provides the assurance that facts are accurately followed and ensures the planners, the design team, construction management, logistics
teams, manufacturers and health & safety. Besides, the clients can obtain a true picture the status of the construction and know what they are paying for.

BIM helps in maintaining the level of accuracy and creating an accurate costing analysis. Through BIM, the entire team of construction can remain well coordinated. The two major advantages of BIM are that it helps to complete a construction project on time and within the proposed budget. It is not surprising hence, to find the increased employment of BIM in varied projects to keep delay and over budget of projects in control.
