Building Information Modelling Standard

A complete consensus open BIM standard should be developed for every construction projects to discuss, organize, share, reuse and apply digital information between AEC and owner / operator competently throughout the life of the facility from the commencement of a project through to the decommissioning of a structure. This digital information can be characterized in contract language.

The BIM standard can be useful to enhance the efficiency virtually of commercial and public activity that includes planning, design, construction, management, renovation, repurposing, decommissioning and final demolition of facility.

With the execution of this Standard, information interoperability and reliability will develop considerably.

The BIM standard facilitates project stakeholders to make a huge savings in money and superior quality of life for facility.

The BIM standard also comprises of technical standards work. In order to ensure interoperability, the encoding schemas, software service interfaces, application programming interfaces (APIs) should be settled mutually.

There are various types of BIM standard available in the market among them major are - The National Building Information Model Standard™ (NBIMS), The National CAD Standard (NCS), The American Institute of Architects (AIA) standard, Precast Concrete National BIM standard, sponsored by the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) etc. There are also some other standards like Standards of the National Institute for Building Sciences, ISO standards, Open Standards Consortium for Real Estate (OSCRE) standards, Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards, The FIATECH capital investment roadmap, CSI OmniClass taxonomies, COBIE (Construction to Operations Building Information Exchange), etc.

NCS

The NCS (National Cad Standard) is a product from the cooperation of the AIA, CSI, and NIBS serving CAD community through the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) NCS Project Committee to discover, recognize, preserve and share information in every set of drawings at every phase of the project.

NCS is a language widely approved by more than 5,000 workplaces across the country and overseas as the "language" of design data.

Today's NCS is seamlessly integrated with building information modeling (BIM) and is available in an online, easily searchable format.

NCS involves a mechanism to modify the constituent documents to fulfill the requirements of the broadest probable range of users.

NCS consists of the NIBS' Foreword, Administration Guidelines, AIA CAD Layer Guidelines, and the CSI Uniform Drawing System, DWG files of the Uniform Drawing System symbols, Microsoft Excel files of the AIA CAD Layer Guidelines, Uniform Drawing System terms and abbreviations, schedules and regulatory information, and tables of the plotting guidelines, appendices including the Statement of Conformance, Optional and Recommended Items, Rules of Governance, and Implementation Guidelines etc.

NCS provides a common understandable standard containing common terms, symbology, and naming conventions across the board. Information is accumulated in the same place in all drawing sets consequently translation among formats can be predicted easily. Time required for file formatting and error checking is minimized to a great extent.

NBIMS

The National Building Information Model Standard™ (NBIMS) set up standard definitions for building information exchanges to maintain significant business frameworks with standard semantics and ontologies. The standard works in tandem with software to create the basis for the accurate and well-organized communication and business necessary for the building industry and industry transformations.  The Standard allows all participants in facilities-related progressions to gain more consistent results from commercial agreements.

National BIM Standard is valid to all global countries and almost common in nature. There may be some marginal changes to make the standard country specific.

The first consensus version of National BIM Standard-United States (NBIMS-US) Version 2 is awaiting for arrival soon. The new standard will focus more on the Reference Standards, Information Exchange Standards and Practice Standards.

The American Institute of Architects has characterized BIM as "a model-based technology linked with a database of project information”. This reveals the general dependence on database technology as the basis.

AIA developed “The Building Information Modeling Protocol Exhibit Document E202” which is a useful document compatible with Building Information Model (BIM) technology addressing the BIM standards for forming and sharing BIM model. The standard is also vital for model requirement and model management.

The AIA standard is a helpful resource to generate valuable, healthy, secure, and sustainable buildings with better design.

Precast Concrete National BIM standard

Precast Concrete National BIM standard is developed through a committee of the Precast/Pre-stressed Concrete Institute (PCI) and the Charles Pankow Foundation (CPF) to maintain the significant information exchanges surrounding for precast concrete.

The standard contains a complete Information Delivery manual (IDM) provides  industry-wide exchanges regarding precast pieces like stemmed deck members, flat deck members, beams, columns, load bearing walls and spandrels, piles, and architectural facades and others are all through the product lifecycle. Numerous business cases are recognized involving design-bid-build, design-build and precast as lead contractor modes of project delivery. The lifecycle phases contains architectural design and construction modeling, structural engineering of precast, fabrication level detailing and manufacture planning as well as logistics and erection.

The standard also deals with a variety of contract delivery methods in diverse up-front workflows. The exchanges are connecting different actors in the procedure together with architects, structural engineers, precast engineers/detailers, general contractors/construction managers, precast plant managers and erectors.
